Explanation of Quotas
All accounts on Chebucto Community Net have a mailbox quota and a disk
space quota.
Mailbox quota refers to everything in the Inbox of a Chebucto account and
any mail folders while disk space quota refers to any other user account
files stored on Chebucto's server such as web pages.
For the proper operation of a Chebucto account, the account's usage needs
to remain below both the mail and disk quotas. When a quota is exceeded, a
seven day grace period is given to remove the excess mail or files. After
that, the overquota service is suspended until the excess is removed.
There is also a maximum limit which if exceeded will cause the service to
be suspended immediately.

Once the mail quota has been exceeded, mail can no longer be deleted using
the Chebucto Webmail service. Excess mail needs to be deleted using the
Chebucto text service.
Logging on to text
service
To safely delete mail while overquota, you'll need to login to
the Chebucto text interface. An easy way to do this is to use a telnet
program. All versions of Windows since Windows 3.11 have a telnet program
included. Macintosh OS X and better has a telnet program included. If
you're on a Macintosh using software earlier than OS X you can find a
telnet program by putting telnet into the Search box at
Tucows.com then choose one of the
programs from the list. Freeware means no cost to you.
Chebucto Community Net also supports secure SSH encrypted telnet access to
the text interface. SSH programs are available for all software platforms
at Tucows.com. In your SSH program
use the host name: chebucto.ca
Step One: Start your telnet or SSH program.
On a Windows system, go to Start. Go to Run. On Windows
Vista, press the Windows key and letter r key at the same time to open the
Run window.
Type in the
Run window:
telnet chebucto.ca
and hit Enter. A new window will open up.
On a Macintosh running OS X, under Applications you will find
Terminal.
Start Terminal and enter:
telnet
When the prompt:
telnet>
appears, type in:
telnet chebucto.ca
then hit Return.
Step Three: Logging into the text interface.
At the login prompt, type in your
username then hit Enter. At Password, type in your email password. Do
not type in your Chebucto Plus password. Hit Enter. When prompted to hit
Enter to continue, hit Enter. When prompted for a Terminal Type, put in:
VT100
and hit Enter.
Wait a couple of seconds for the page to load. You can check on your
quota usage by typing:
gquota
then hit Enter. Every time you check your quota, refresh the display to
show new values by hitting the Ctrl key and the letter r key at the same
time.
Your inbox is listed as "/var/mail" and your disk space is listed as
"/var/csuite/csuite1.0/home".
How to fix overquota
disk space
If your disk space is overquota, you need to delete the excess files
first before fixing an overquota mail problem. To access your files on
Chebucto, type:
gfiles
then hit Enter. You will see a listing of files and folders containing
files. To delete a file, highlight it with the cursor by moving the Up and
Down arrows on your keyboard then hitting the letter r to Remove the file.
Hit y for Yes to confirm and the file is permanently deleted.
To enter a folder containing files, highlight the folder then hit Enter.
You can check your progress deleting excess files by typing gquota at any
time while browsing your files on Chebucto's server. Remember to hit Ctrl
and the letter r key at the same time to refresh the display to show the
new numbers. Ideally you want to have at least 300 K of free space in
your files area to allow new files to be written.
How to fix overquota
mail
To enter PINE, the Chebucto text service mail program, type:
gmail
and hit Enter. The very first time that you use PINE, you will be asked if
you want to receive an information email from the University of
Washington, authors of the PINE program. Hit y for Yes or n for No to
proceed.
You are now in the text interface version of your mailbox.
To use the text mail, go from email to email with the Up and
Down arrow keys on your keyboard. To delete a message, press the letter
d while the email is highlighted. You will see a letter D appear next to
the email to show it has been marked deleted. To erase messages marked
as deleted, press the letter x then the letter y to confirm. Once a
message has been erased, it is permanently gone.
When you have erased a sufficiently large amount of email
(and remember it is not necessarily the number of emails causing you
problems, it is their size), you can type the letter q to Quit, y for
Yes and y again to erase any mail in the mailbox that has been marked as
deleted.
Once you are no longer in PINE, you can type gquota and hit Enter to check
on your
progress (use Ctrl and r to refresh the displayed numbers).
If you need to delete more
mail, then go back to your mailbox with gmail as you did above.
When you are completely done, type q and y again to quit the
text interface and close the telnet window.
