In recognition of the forthcoming 150th anniversary of the
Nova Scotian Institute of Science, Joerg-Henner Lotze, Director, Humboldt Field
Research Institute at Steuben Maine has offered a scholarship to one member
of the Nova Scotian Institute of Sciencer for the forthcoming summer
of 2009. This Scholarship will include the cost of tuition, accommodation
and meals for a one-week Seminar. The NSIS member will only have to cover the
travel costs to Maine, about a seven hour journey by car or about 12 hours by
bus. If you, as an NSIS member, are interested to be considered for this
scholarship, please select the seminar topic you wish to attend (see list
below) Then check that you are available on the given date and send your
name, the seminar you wish to attend, your contact number, email and address to
the President of
the NSIS, David Richardson
( david.richardson@smu.ca).
At the Annual Dinner on the
first Monday in May, we will draw the name of the scholarship winner (and a
reserve name) from among those members who have submitted their names. We
expect that among the members, four or five, may be interested and
available to take advantage of this generous scholarship and attend one of the
courses at Eagle Hill. We will then contact the winner and if he/she is
unable, for some reason, to go in May, will contact the reserve.
The Humboldt Field Research Institute at Eagle Hill, Steuben Maine, has
been offering week-long courses to support of field biologists, researchers,
field naturalists for over 20 years. These Seminars range from watershed level
subjects, and subjects in classical ecology, to specialized seminars in
advanced biology, taxonomy, and ecological restoration.

The Eagle Hill field seminars and workshops are of special interest
because they focus on the natural history of one of North America's most
spectacular and pristine natural areas, the coast of eastern Maine from Acadia National
Park to Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge and beyond. Most seminars combine
field studies with follow-up lab studies and a review of the literature.
Additional information is provided in lectures, slide presentations, and
discussions. Seminars are primarily for people who have some background in
biology or who are keenly interested in learning about a new subject. The
Institute also publishes the three well known journals and NSIS members are
invited to subscribe or submit papers:
Northeastern Naturalist: http://www.eaglehill.us/nena
Southeastern Naturalist: http://www.eaglehill.us/sena
Journal of the North Atlantic: http://www.eaglehill.us/jona
