Chebucto Community Net:
Keeping Majordomo ml-priv lists in synch with Edit Groups
Problem:
When an IP directory is created, both an edit group and a majordomo
ml-priv list are simultaneously created. While the members of both
groups are initially the same, subsequent changes to the edit group are
not reflected in the ml-priv list.
Over time, this means that the two lists get gradually further and further
out of synch. This is potentially an administrative, user and security
problem. As editors (or more generally the CCN) we need to know that when
we send a message to an ml-priv list (or a user sends one via the 'C' -
comment - function) that it is actually reaching those people who are in
charge of administering the site and that, if it is of a sensitive
nature, it is not reaching others.
Solution:
- In the longer term, CCN-TECH is considering this issue and I hope that
we can soon have a technical solution which will keep the membership of
these two lists in synch.
- In the immediate future we need to do this manually. There are two
instances:
- Change of an IPE1 and thus ml-priv Listowner.
If an IPE1 (the Editor in Charge) changes, then we need to send a message
to ml-admin@chebucto.ns.ca
advising them of the change in the edit group and asking them to make a
corresponding change in the listowner of ml-priv list.
- Change of an IP Editor
If this happens the CCN Editor responsible should take two actions:
- Send a subscribe/unsubscribe message to majordomo@chebucto.ns.ca saying
(for instance):
subscribe ip-foobar az123
(where ip-foobar is the ml-priv name and az123 is the new IP Editor).
- Send a message to the IPE1 telling them that they will receive an
Approve message from majordomo and that they should respond positively to
it.
They need a password to do so. Most will have no idea what
this password is because they have never used/changed it.
Thus, you must help them accomplish this. There are two instances:
- If they have not changed it, there is a default form of the ml-priv
password. To learn what this is contact the CCN Editors
N.B. Note that the ml-priv name and edit group name are usually the
same alphanumeric string, however, they need not be so bear this in
mind.
- If they have changed it from the default then they must remember what
it is or else intervention from ml-admin@chebucto.ns.ca is
required.
- One addition point in relation to majordomo mailing lists: if for some
reason the IP website either closes down on the CCN or moves to another
server, then we need to notify Mailing List Administration that
this is so and that the list should be closed.
