The last thing we want at this point (or any point for that matter) is a costly judicial process. I can think of a couple of other things to do with the extra(?) money. Modems, come to mind.

At the same time, even if we are succesfull to avoid a judicial process, those complains have to be dealt with. Meaning, our volunteers' time has to be diverted from whatever they were doing to deal with a more urgent situation. I can assure you, they don't need that.

Please, and this is valid for IPs and users, make sure you're not using copyrighted material in your pages and if you are, notify the copyright owners and ask for their permission.

Help-Help-Help

So we don't to have to come up with a column, after the deadline... If you like to write and/or read, this would be a great place to horne your skills and help your community. As you can see the articles are short and straight forward. This also means there are lots of room for improvement.

Minutes -- CCN Editors - February 05 - 1996

Place: The Daily Grind, Spring Garden Rd., Halifax, N.S.

• Meeting called to order. Coffee cups in hand. Introductions.
• Present were:
  • Ed Dyer, Gerard MacNeil, Janet MacKay, Matthew Wulfman, Carol Sin, Ben Armstrong, Carlos Freitas, Doug Guptill, Bernard Tremblay, Blaine Murphy, Peter Mortimer, Jan Fullerton, Chris Majka Sandy Sutherland, David Potter (apologies in advance for omissions: attendance was not taken, this is from memory)

• sacrificial minute-taking "volunteer" chosen (Doug Guptill)

• CCN has been a success.
• What is CCN now? What is its plan for the future?
• Policies/procedures were developed in an ad hoc manner, to meet requirements as they came up. CCN has now grown to the point where internal structural changes are required due to the large volume of activity. This is aggravated by the fact that Gerard can now devote only half his time to CCN. He wants to concentrate his efforts on IP management (user access) and IP tools. He wants to stay technical, and hand over the policy decisions to another body/person. Possible structure:
  • system persons <-> IP committee <-> IPs
  in which the IP committee makes policy decisions.
• There is a need to formalise and streamline the IP approval process. There is the issue of who gets access, and what kind of access (read or read/write) to the IP Data Base. Some information there is sensitive, not public, and needs to be protected.
• There is one command which creates an IP which is currently run by Gerard
• The procedure which installs an IP page needs work. It actually changes the submitted page. If the procedure croaks before finishing, manual intervention is required to undo those changes.
• The functionality of RCS is not being fully utilised.
• relative links to other pages are now long, and must be created by hand. Would be nice to have a non-manual way to do this.
• Wants to give 2 "standard" mailing lists automatically to each IP upon creation: one public, one private. For now each IP requests their own as needed.
• Each IP page should be "well-integrated", i.e. It should have a standard button bar at the bottom, with a link back to the CCN home page.

Ben speaks:

• a copy of the [go ip] pages are passed around.
• the online IP approval form needs to be fixed up. Default directory/classification? How to tell of the agreement has been received?

• There should be a standard IP page template. Each page on CCN should have something which identifies it as a CCN page. a copy of IPTemplate.html is passed around. Consider this to be approved as the standard, except the "comments button" should be replaced with a "contacts button".
• agreement is reached not to pursue an "up button"
• some discussion of "search pages" vs "access pages" ?

• all have IP training? Most seem to have. Some don't, but are in the process of getting it.
• all prospective editors should subscribe to the editors mailing list.
• IP applications need to be responded to. The IP should be involved in the classification selection. Cross-list sometimes.
• Ask ccn-ip about status of application. CCN-IP members have access to the IP database. Should be keeping it up-to-date in the process.
• Ensure all pages adhere to the standard. The standard button bar should be at the bottom. Other button bars can be there, but should be visually separate.

• contacts file: standard name proposed: name_contacts.html (e.g. SciEnvTech_contacts.html for the SciEnvTech.html page)
• discussion of new CCN home page/directory structure.
• In long names, use underscore instead of dot, so as not to confuse operating systems like DOS and VMS.
• check out Ben's account (~aa458/ccnStuff) for proposed standards.

• What does an editor do?
