January activities

Welcome to 1996, as cold as it is here in Nova Scotia. I look forward to your continued comments and suggestions this year, and hope you keep them coming. Please forward any mail to Linda MacKenzie at af088@ccn·cs·dal·ca. I am interested in learning about new websites that interest older adults. Pleae take the time to e-mail me the web sites if you think other seniors may benefit from this information.

Spencer House Seniors Centre has a public access terminal for the Chubecto Community net. If you are aged fifty-five plus you are welcome to drop in and use the public access terminal for free. All you need is an account with Chubecto Community Net. We can help you register if you require an account. We are located at 5596 Morris Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia, B3J 1C2. Phone (902) 421-6131.

Presently the computer available to older adults is donated by Computer Annex, 958 Cole Harbour Road, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, B2V 1E6. Gary Tower at Computer Annex can be reached by telephone at (902) 434-4424, or fax (902) 435-4133. We look forward to working with Computer Annex in February when we implement "Introduction To Computers." This session will include information you need to ask before purchasing a computer. This workshop will be held at Spencer House.

I am also pleased to let you know that in addition to access to the Chubecto Community Net we have been donated an account by Internet Passport Services Inc. This means that if you use our public access terminal you have free access to the World Wide Web, 9am-4:30pm, Monday through Friday, and Saturdays 10am-4pm. Inquiries about IPS and their services can be directed to IPS, Jeffrey Campbell, President, 36B Topple Drive, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, B3B 1L6, phone 902-468-3763, or e-mail inquiries to sales@ips.ca, the website for IPS is http://www.ips.ca. We are also looking forward to an Internet Workshop soon to be presented by IPS at Spencer House. This will be a great opportunity to view the graphics available in cyberspace!

The next beginners internet workshop at Spencer House is Wednesday, January 17 at 1:00pm. Please feel free to attend if you would like to brush up on your skills. Call (902) 421-6131 to register; there is no charge.

We are planning a new project at Spencer House. Plans are in progress for the first edition of a Spencer House Cookbook. Do you have a favorite recipe you would like to see published? if so please send it in or e-mail it to me. The cookbook is scheduled for publication late spring. I would like the recipes as soon as possible.

January is Alzheimer's Awarness Month. Throughout the month volunteers are knocking on doors to raise funds to support the services of the Society so that we may soon find a cause and cure for Alzhemier's Disease. The Society is recruiting canvassers. If you have a few hours to spare and can canvass your street or a street in your neighbourhood it would be very much appreciated. Just call 422-7961.

The Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia is committed to enhancing the quality of life for the 10,000 Nova Scotians who have this disease, and the thousands-more affected. For information on Alzheimer Disease or the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, call 422-7961. Thank you for your support.

There will be a guest speaker, Jean Deveau, coordinator of Respite Program-Alzheimer's Society speaking at Spencer House, Wednesday, January 24 at 12:20 p.m. Ms. Deveau will discuss the early signs and symptoms of Alzheimer's disease.

Well bye for now, and I look forward to your comments, and favorite recipes.

Linda MacKenzie
