ISP Transition Tales
ISP, for those that don't know, stands for Internet Service Provider. And
(just in case you don't know), Chebucto has just changed ISPs from NSTN
Inc. to Internet Services
and Information Systems (isis). At the same time, we removed our
dependence on the Dalhousie network. Chebucto now has its own network
numbers - one for Chebucto itself and one for the Cable/ISDN network
supplying some of our public access terminals (PATs). The public
information on the awarding of the contract to isis comes from the
Evaluation Committee.
And then the fun began - implementation. We installed a T1 link to get
high speed service from isis - which included new routers on both ends.
And then the IP numbers arrived late so we had to temporarily use an isis
number. And the T1 didn't work properly the first time. And US traffic
was getting blocked for some mysterious reason in Toronto. And Internet
routing tables (the data files that tell one computer how to find another
one on the Internet) had to be updated on thousands of routers that weld
together the fabric of the Internet.
Outstanding efforts by Baha Baydar and Gary Bowdridge of isis, Ralph Zinck of MT&T, John Sherwood of
Dalhousie Information Services and Trent MacDougall and David Trueman of
Dalhousie Computing kept the downtime to a minimum (four hours was the
longest disruption). We had some bumps, some with the technology and some
with getting everything running smoothly again. As usual, we're working
on it.
Coming Up Next
This month I'm introducing a new feature of this Newsletter article. It
will focus on introducing the next service implementation or upgrade on
Chebucto. A good place to talk about it is the CCN
User Interface mailing list.
