Midwifery training in Canada

Canadian Midwifery Regulators Consortium
Information about the regulation of midwifery in Canada for Canadian registered midwives, internationally-educated midwives, and the general public.

The Colleges of Midwifery in each province are the accreditation bodies. Check with them to see which courses are accredited

In Nova Scotia, the Midwifery Regulatory Council determines accreditation.

If you are willing to go farther afield, here are some other links to get you started:

• The MEAC (Midwifery Education Accreditation Council ) website: this has a list of accredited US-based schools for non-nurse midwifery. Remember that this does NOT mean accreditation in Canada.
• Midwives College of Utah Includes a link to information for Canadian students, and although this is geared mostly toward British Columbia, it may be similar in nature to what is in store for Nova Scotia.
• Birthwise Midwifery School in Maine
• Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing (distance education)
• A masters thesis on the Experiences and Education of Midwives in Three Canadian Provinces (.pdf)
• The website for the book, "Paths to Becoming a Midwife: Getting an Education" - This book covers mostly US options, but there is lots of good general information, and one of the articles is posted on the website itself.

Of course, if you are wishing there were training right here in Nova Scotia (or at least in the Maritimes) you could always write to the Minister or your MLA...
