Chebucto.ns.ca now points to a VCN at 129.173.4.200, and should be fully
implemented in the DNS system. However, this number will change during
the transition.
Ccn.cs.dal.ca is now 205.150.72.25. On transition, this IP address will go
away, and chebucto.ns.ca will become an alias to chebucto.ns.ca
Both chebucto.ns.ca and chebucto.ns.ca (and their www.* equivalents) will
continue to be maintained as aliases.

The VCN implementation provides for a root $CSROOT for each VCN at
/csuite/$HOST/, from which their info/ and home/ trees will extend. The
shortcut go vcn
(implemented by script lynxcgi:/ccn/lynxcgi-bin/select-vcn) will allow
each user to switch between chebucto.ns.ca and chebucto.ns.ca, or other
VCN's as available. Support will continue for chebucto.ns.ca and
chebucto.ns.ca. Further development may be needed, if specific limitations
are encountered.

We will be changing to a much better news server along with the change in
Internet Service Provider.
Unfortunately, all the article numbers will be changed, so the only
practical way to synchronize will be to reset everyone's .newsrc records.
Chris Maxwell will compare the lists of newsgroups from the current server
and the new server, and send a request to the News-server manager to add
any missing groups. Our local newsgroup name file will also need to be
updated.
At login time (after the implementation date), a script will check (by
date of modification, or by a log tree) whether the .newsrc file has been
updated, and strip all the article numbers, as well as unsubscribed
groups, from the file. [also posting history file? -e.d.]
We will also need to implement a posting-only news-server, so that all
articles posted from CCN will show chebucto.ns.ca as originating host.
The script which can be used to suscribe newsgroups should be changed to a
lynx-cgi version (avoids permission problems) and should do a fuzzy search
on the newsgroup list to verify the name requested.

A proxy server will be implemented on CCN to serve the cable network.
Initially only http: will be supported, later other services may be added.
It is expected that telnet will not be among them, as users can already
telnet to CCN and then telnet out from their CCN account.
We will probably test the apache server first, and if not suitable, try
the CERN version.
A local PC will be used to run initial tests, then migrate to local cable,
and if that is satisfactory, then evaluate it on the cable network. The
PAT's and school routers will need to be configured to connect via the
proxy server, once implemented.

- Moving ISP
- Change of name
- Implications
- improved service
- no interruptions expected
- old names will continue to work
- on switchover date, all users who are not already set up to use VCN's
will be switched to chebucto.ns.ca, and will be able to select their VCN
name as appropriate.
- go vcn to
select alternate addresses (important for mailing lists which restrict
posting and option requests only from members.) For mail, the address is
read when the mail system actually processes the message, which may be
several minutes after "sending" the message. So don't send a message on
one VCN setting, and then quickly switch VCN setting - wait a few minutes.
If you want to be sure, CC: to yourself, which will be processed with the
outgoing message.
- news: loss of record of articles read (old articles visible again);
possible missing groups; implementation of new method to request newsgroup
changes.

Techteam
We are dealing with problems reported by the techteam,
some of whom are testing the new version. We are urged to continue testing
and report any findings to the beta-lynx mailing list.
Especially please try also changing to a VCN and telnetting to it.

It appears that there are serious performance and/or reliability problems
with the Library PAT systems. After much discussion, it was decided that
we should recommend pulling the service temporarily, until we are
able to resolve the current performance problems. The slowest unit is at
the Halifax Main Branch Library, so we might use that one to experiment
with. If new software or hardware are required, that needs to be dealt
with. Once working well, then it will be tested on site, a communication
method will be established with the Library staff, documentation will be
prepared, and the staff trained. Only then will the system be made
accessible to the public. Then this process can be implemented with the
other locations.
Chris Maxwell, Chris Travers, Sean Garagan, David Benoit, and James ...
will carry out this project, with help from others as needed.

Information Providers Committee
The editors find themselves frustrated by the great numbers of messages
that the current weblint generates, because of lack of support for HTML
2/3/3.2, and Java, Netscape, and Internet Explorer extensions.
A new version of Weblint is
available which supports the advanced versions of HTML, with switches to
control activation of the extensions supported and deactivate those things
we do not wi sh to worry about. A man page is also available, as well as
some interesting examples of www implementations.
David Trueman will look at installing and configuring this version for our
use.
Return to Topic List
The editors have noted the incongrous placement of the made and RCS lines
above the and tags if present, and feel that inserting the
tags in the standard location would be better. Techteam noted that the
standard is not well defined in this area, and that the weblint warnings
could be switched off, but in general agreed that it should be a fairly
easy change to insert the information inside the section, if
present.
